What does the state of Texas put in their water supply? I’m not sure what it is but I think these guys have been mixing the local water with imported stuff from Glasgow! I do suspect though, these guys listen to a lot of Pavement (Slanted and Enchanted era). It actually sounds as if Pavement were trying to play Teenage Fanclub songs – and then record them on their next door neighbor’s tape recorder (while still next door!). the songs shine in all their lo-fi glory and go to show that if you can write great songs, it doesn’t matter how much you spend recording them.
One song on this lo-fi masterpiece sounds like Guided by Voices at their best. Another sounds like the Velvet Underground, another like the Silver Apples, and my fave track of the four, and believe me it’s not an easy choice, is the one that sounds like Pavement.
As surprisingly obtuse as Pavement’s Treble Kicker [slay tracks: 1933 – 1969] was a decade ago. Diverse approaches to pop songwriting muddied by little attempt for fidelity, instead favoring the songs themselves. Depending on the time of day, I hear Beach Boys and Velvet Underground influences in this plaintive melancholic debut. Wow.
